10 Animal Superheroes We Know You’ll Love

Animal heroes come in all shapes, sizes and species. What you don't picture are lions, gorillas and even whales throwing themselves in harm's way to save some helpless human. These animal heroes can give you motivation, make you smile and forget all about a bad day. We should all be thankful to them.

1. Lucy, The Dog Blood Donor

Lucy is one of many animal heroes who help save other animals lives, thanks in part to the services provided by Dove Lewis. Lucy donated blood to a dog named Rudy a few years ago, and his owners were so thankful to have received the blood for their pet that they signed their other dog up to be a blood donor. Dogs who receive the blood donations pay it forward as well. After she helped another dog, their owners decided to join the program. Lucy's owners understand how important it is to help others. Their home is full of people doing so much for the community, so it was natural for her to give back as well. Lucy has been coming in for two years now, and she helped a number of other dogs and their families.

2. Gorilla Saves Boy

When a 3-year-old boy at the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois walked over the gorilla enclosure, he fell over the fence. The 18-foot drop left the boy unconscious and with a critical head injury. We know how gorillas can be dangerously persnickety with their territory, so the police were barred from immediate action. So, with the boy in danger and no help in sight, Binti Jua stepped in. And as much as that sounds like Indian Superman, he wasn't.  He was just one of the zoo's gorillas. Binti came to the child's aid by cradling him in her arms and later bringing the boy to the enclosure door, where people could get to him. The staff and police were quick to note that without Binti's assistance, the situation could have been much worse.

3. Rabbit Saves Man From Diabetic Coma

When he was sleeping on his couch in his home in Cambridgeshire, England, Simon Steggall fell into a diabetic coma. His wife was nearby when it happened, but she thought that her husband had fallen asleep on the couch after a hard day at work. It was Dory, the house rabbit, who noticed something wrong and hopped on top of Simon. Dory began to thump around emphatically and lick at Simon's mouth-trying to return her owner back to life. Victoria soon saw Dory's unusual behavior and figured out that the rabbit somehow knew more about her husband's dire medical state than she did. Victoria called the paramedics, and her husband was saved for. For saving Simon's life, Dory was awarded honorary membership into the Rabbit Welfare Association.

4. Lions Saved The Little Girl

It turns out that even dangerous predators like lions can save other animals and even people. In Ethiopia, a group of men kidnapped a 12-year-old girl in order to marry her forcibly to a member of their community. Seven days later, the girl was found in the jungle under the protection of three lions. Subsequently, the three lions had witnessed some men beating the helpless girl, so they attacked the intruders, rescued and guarded her. When the police eventually came to the girl's rescue, the lions retreated. Interestingly , they went back to the wild only when they knew that the girl is being returned home. In her testimony, the girl said that lions protected her until the police arrived. Experts say that the lions might have been reacting to her tears as if they were the cries of a lion cub.

5. The Cat-Nurse

In 2014, the black cat named Rademenes, arrived at an animal shelter in Poland with a severe disease of the upper respiratory tract, causing him excruciating pain. His owners brought him there to be put to sleep, but the staff decided to give Rademenes a second chance. To everyone’s surprise, the cheerful cat made a quick recovery. And even more, after overcoming the disease, Rademenes started to take care of other animals at the rehabilitation center and earned the nickname ’’nurse’’.  He gives hugs to the other fluffy patients, and keeps an eye on them as they rest and recover, and sometimes he even licks their ears. Today, the Rademenes is almost a full-time employee of the shelter. It is said that those patients who Rademenes looks after often recover faster.

6. Dasher Saved A Child

When Dasher was a 7-month-old puppy, he earned the title of hero. The dog spent about 15 hours in a forest during a storm protecting his owners’ son. When 2-year-old Dante walked out of the family, Dasher was the only one who noticed. Dante wandered all over the place, but luckily his faithful dog followed closely behind him. Eventually, Dante and Dasher lost their way in a forest about 1.8 miles (3 km) from home. It took a long time for Dante’s parents to notice that their kid was missing. His parents called the police and a search begun for Dante. Alas, a terrible storm broke out that night, which halted the search. The next day, 15 hours after it was noticed that the child was missing, Dante and his dog were found in the forest. Dante didn’t have a single scratch. Dasher helped Dante during the storm and protected him from predators.

7. Geo, A Truly Heroic Dog

Geo is a charming half-breed of Collie and German shepherd who saved the life of his 10-year-old owner, Charlie Riley. Charlie was playing on the street with his dog when suddenly a truck rushed onto the pavement at high-speed, racing straight at the boy. Geo instantly pushed the kid aside and took the brunt of the blow from the advancing truck. The dog was thrown onto the road, and the truck driver, trying to escape from the scene, ran down the poor a second time. Geo miraculously survived, but he had multiple internal injuries, and his legs and spine were broken. As luck would have it, timely veterinary care saved this brave dog from death, but he had to undergo treatment and rehabilitation. Now, the dog is completely healthy; and enjoys life with his family that will always be grateful to him for saving their son.

The Polarland Aquarium, China, organized a free diving contest in their 20-foot-deep, arctic-temperature whale tank. Several several participated but were forbidden to use breathing apparatus. Their prize was the chance to apply as a whale trainer. 26-year-old Yang Yun was one of the divers to participate. Sadly, after diving into the depths of the pool, Yang's leg cramped and prevented her from swimming properly. In her panic, Yang began to choke, which would have led to her imminent drowning. Luckily for Yung, Mila, one of the two beluga whales in the tank, noticed that Yang needs help and swam to her rescue. Mila grabbed the girl’s leg with her mouth and started forcefully pushing her to the surface. Yang survived and likely wouldn't have without Mila's help.

LuLu a butt-ugly potbellied pig started out as a birthday present given to a woman who didn't even want to take her home. So celebrant’s mom, Jo Ann, took the pig instead. When Jo Ann had a heart attack, her brave pig took one look and sprang into action. LuLu bolted for help, which was heroic in itself, considering her girth. After successfully breaking out of the fence, she was faced with a direction problem because she had never left the fenced yard. How would Lulu know where to go? We'll know soon enough. LuLu escaped her yard and found a highway; she waited for a car to come by. Someone stopped to see why a pig was sleeping on the highway. He followed the pig back to her house and discovered that Jo Ann had suffered a heart attack. He called the paramedics, and Jo Ann was saved.

Fiona Boyd, a farmer in Scotland, was doing her regular duties on her farm. She heard the worried cry of a calf and went to save it, but the mama cow decided to attack her. The thousand-pound cow proceeded to ram Fiona, and several more times. Just as Fiona thought she had no hope left, her horse, Kerry, heard her cries from nearby and ran to help her. Kerry began kicking the cow into submission. That was the only way to calm the raging cow. The horse ended up giving Fiona enough time to crawl back to safety. Fiona was only treated for bruises, and not the bad case of death she could have received if her brave horse had not intervened.
