Animal Fun Facts

All the animals do share very remarkable and distinct characteristics. Sometimes though these characteristics turn out to be really fun. Here are some of these fun and exciting facts that you should know about some animals.

  • Dogs

One of the rulers of the Mongol Empire, Kublai Khan, had owned 5000 Mastiffs, which was the highest number of dogs being held as pets that was ever recorded in the world. The dogs were used for hunting and for assisting in war. In addition, the dogs’ nose is more than just a tracker of smell. Through smelling chemicals in the air, dogs can literally smell your different emotions, making them automatically aware when humans try to fake a smile or pretend to be friendly. Furthermore, a dog can smell the diseases of their owners. Apart from this, dogs can also smell their owners’ hunger and thirst. Their nose is also a tracker for other things.

Although people have fingerprints to make them distinct from each other, dogs have almost an identical pattern on their nose, which is commonly used as a way to identify their puppies quickly.

  •  Ferrets

All ferrets are born deaf and blind. They require a month in order to begin to hear and see. Ferrets are white at birth. Their true color will begin to appear after 3 weeks they are born. Ferret’s sexual maturity is reached when they are 5 or 6 months old. Female ferrets die if they don’t mate with males. In the case where this will happen, female ferrets tend to secrete very high levels of estrogen and if this hormone remains in them for a period longer than it should, it will cause a progressive depression and bone marrow which is fatal to them. All ferrets sleep about 20 hours a day. The word ferret itself is derived from the word ‘furonem ‘which means ‘thief’.

They were named thieves because of their habit of stealing and taking objects, as they do in the wild to build a nest.

  • Koalas

Koalas  can climb more than 100 feet to the top of a tree. The name 'koala' derives from a similar word meaning ‘an animal that doesn’t drink’. Because their diet consists mainly of leaves, they have enough liquids and fluids that makes it almost unnecessary to drink water, as these leaves always contain enough moisture to supply them their water needs. They are marsupials, meaning that they usually carry their babies in a pouch and are not related to bears. They sleep about 16 hours a day. In addition, a baby koala is blind and furless and has only about 2 centimetres length.

In order to have better grip when they are climbing or to hold onto the trees and grip their food, they have two thumbs on their front paws. Most koalas need approximately 100 eucalyptus trees to survive.

  • Frogs

Frogs have the ability to vomit, but not in the way that humans do. They actually expel their stomach and then use their forearms to remove the content. When they finish, frogs put their stomachs back where they were. It has been reported that one frog species tends to swallow its eggs in order to grow inside the stomach. When the eggs are hatching, this frog vomits them and the hatched frogs continue to live on their own. In addition, the species called Barefoot toad smells like peanut butter. Furthermore, the water-holding frog survives in the desert habitat by taking inside as much rainwater as possible that it causes sometimes to be blown up like a balloon. Instead of excreting it as urine, these frogs bring the water back to their mouth to drink it. Finally, the Golden Poison Dart Frog is considered to be the most toxic animal on land.

  • Chickens

Who would say that chickens are rivaling elephants about their memory capacity? Chickens can distinguish approximately 150 different faces of members of their own species. They can also communicate with more than 24 vocalizations, with each having a distinct meaning. Among these meanings includes a cry letting the mothers know whether they are  comfortable and warning their fellow members about different types of predators. Chickens prefer to make several baths in the dust, which makes them extremely frustrated in factory farms when they are not able to clean themselves the way they wish. Just like humans, chickens form several social orders which are commonly known as pecking orders, where all chickens know their place on each of these societies.

Chickens are considered to be the closest relative to Tyrannosaurus Rex. Mother hens have the ability to talk to their unborn babies, and they tend to chirp them every day.

  • Fish

The Orange Roughy is a red fish which lives in the deep sea oceans. After its death, it tends to change its color to orange. Although indeed remarkable, the strangest of all things is that nobody has ever seen it alive or in the process of changing colours. In addition, The Pygmy Goby, Eviota sigillata, a small fish living mostly in reefs, has the shortest living expectancy of all fish species, which only lasts for approximately 2 months. The oldest fish in the world is the Rougheye Rockfish, Sebastes Aleutianus. It has the the longest life span of all fish which goes up to living for 205 years.

These fish are found offshore in the North Pacific. Moreover, some fish species can even fly! They have developed thin wing pectoral fins similar to a wing of a plane that allow species to jump and glide.

  • Pandas

Pandas are good tree-climbers and swimmers. Panda’s only digest 20% of what they eat. The other 80% is excreted. This means pandas produce waste approximately over 12 times a day. Female pandas require five years to reach adulthood, while males need seven years. Phantom pregnancies are not uncommon in giant pandas. Giant pandas do not hibernate during the winter months. This is evidenced by the fact that a panda is diagnosed with carrying a baby only 1 day before birth is happening. Most panda cubs are dying because of several deceases they have to encounter, or because their mother kills them by accident when she is crushing them with her body. In the wild, when mating occurs, male pandas leave the mother and refrain from participating in the upbringing of the cubs.

In Asia, several people in the ancient times were believing that pandas can scare and expel evil spirits from their homes.

  • Jellyfish

Jellyfishes are made from proteins and water and contain no brain. Some jellyfish species have the size of a small needle, but there are some bigger ones that have the size of a human. Jellyfish are eaten by some people in several countries. the ‘immortal jellyfish’ is one of the jellyfish species that lives in the Mediterranean Sea, which is known for owning extremely unique regeneration powers. When it is starving or injured, this species goes to the surface and turns into a blob that helps it to survive. After being in a blob state, its will undergo a process where its cells transform other kinds of cells that helps it rebuild itself.

Even If one of this species is cut into pieces, it will automatically regenerate itself and create new organisms.

  • Ants

Ants conduct war in a way similar to humans. This is done by sending weak ants to the front line in order to preserve the stronger ones. The Formic Acid that is contained within the ants’ chemical structure helps to keep parasites away. Two species in the whole earth learned to domesticate other animals. These are ants and humans. đSome ant species can capture other ants and put them to slavery. Queen ants have the biggest life expectancy live and they can live up to 28 years. Fertilized eggs become female ants, and the rest of the eggs become the male ants. In addition, there are some species of carpenter ants that can explode when they are in danger.

If there is no other way to escape death, they contract their abs to cause a burst inside them that explodes, thus committing suicide.

  • Horses

Horses tend use their ears, eyes and nostrils in order to show their mood. In addition, horses can show their feelings through making facial expressions. Horses have the ability to recognize their owners through smelling them. One of the best ways to differentiate a female and male horse is by counting their teeth, as female horses have 36 and stallions have 40 teeth. Horses do not have the ability to vomit or burp. Furthermore, horses cannot breathe through using their mouths.

This is the main reason why horses do not pant in the way other animals do, such as dogs. Horses tend to sleep normally two to three hours a day. This time is even shorter in the winter because of the cold, as horses tend to prefer warmer conditions.

  • Sheep

Sheep are considered to be stupid but, in fact, they are very intelligent animals. They have an excellent long memory and can remember humans for many years. Like humans they use a neural process and a part of their brain to remember what they have seen. So, sheep brain has many similarities to the human brain. They can recognize immediately when a sheep is missing from their flock. They can even be aware of when a sheep of their flock has died as they have bonds with one another. When they lose someone they really love they feel lost and down for months.

They cry for their lost friends realizing that they will no longer be with them. Sheep will also cure themselves when they are ill. They eat special plants and the needed nutrients that cure them.

  • Kangaroos

Kangaroos have rest all day long. They become active only late evening, at night or early morning. Red kangaroos are the largest marsupials that grow up to 2 metres. Kangaroos don’t live alone. They live with other males and females. There is always one dominant male in the mob and it is the only one that can mate with the females of the mob. Kangaroos breed all year round. When a female kangaroo bears a joey (younger kangaroo) she mates over and over again. Red kangaroos can live eating fresh green grass instead of drinking water. Kangaroos are the only large animals that can move by hopping.

One of the interesting facts of this animal is that when two kangaroos meet for the first time they always try to touch each other’s noses and sniff.

  • Swans

The mute swan is considered to be a royal bird in England due to its beauty and elegancy. Swans mate for life using the same nest every year and they have only one partner for their entire life. They are the symbol of true love. However, there are some exceptions. Whenever a mate dies the swan will mate with another. They prevent their babies from predators and wild animals furiously. Swans are very intelligent birds and remember who treated them kindly. Swans live from 20 to 30 years depending on its type.

Swans can sleep both on water and on land standing on one leg or wile just floating on the water. Swans are among the largest flying birds and they fly in a V-shaped formation.

  • Cats

Cats are the most popular pets in the world. Cats are smarter animals and their brain is similar to a human brain. They are very intelligent and sensitive. Hearing is their strongest sense. Cats are said to detect earthquake quivering 10 minutes earlier. Cats sleep very much, usually 12-15 hours. In this way they get energy. While sleeping you can see its rapid eye movement, this means that they are dreaming. Owning a cat reduces the heart attack and many other illnesses. Cats’ eyesight becomes strong at night as they have powerful night vision. But they can’t see directly below their noses. That’s why sometimes they don’t notice the food under their nose.

Adult cats only meow to communicate with humans and they recognize their owners easily. An interesting fact is that cats can get sick or die from eating chocolate as they cannot taste anything sweet.

  • Pigeons

There are a number of reasons to appreciate pigeons. They recognize people who have been nice to them. Their vision is extraordinary unlike humans. They are able to see everything in a fusion of colors making the world appear more colorful. They have an excellent long-term memory and can even study the alphabet and play ping pong. When pigeons fly together they reach their destination more efficiently than the ones that fly alone. During their lifetime they really love only once, that’s why they are called monogamous birds. They are very responsible parents and share their duties equally.  All parents can take care of other babies during the breeding season, even if they aren't their own.

Pigeons are the only birds in the world that swallow water without lifting their heads. Being very sensitive they are able to hear many sounds and detect earthquakes and electrical storms.
