The most intelligent creatures in the world are humans. But there are some species of animals that show intelligence and are considered to be the smartest ones in the world. Find out which animals they are and how it is possible for them to be smarter than other species.
1. Dolphins
According to many scientists dolphins can be considered very smart animals and they can be even compared to humans. The study has shown that their brain has the same complicated folds which enable them to be very intelligent creatures. Dolphins have large brains structured for different emotions. Many intellectual traits have been taken but the intelligence of dolphins is closely related to their brain. They are capable of self- awareness and this is such feature that not all species posses. Being well known in aquatic shows dolphins are able to learn very complex tricks performing an incredible show and following their trainer’s instructions.
They can interact with the audience easily, ask for food and respond to people. Dolphins are very kind hearted and value people who treat them tenderly.
2. Ravens
Though ravens have small brains they are smarter and have problem solving abilities. They can do puzzles and remember your face perfectly. Being the largest animal of the crow family ravens really have a great learning ability which is based on their logic. Ravens can pass through many complex tests without any mistake. Their excellent logic is also connected to their difficult lifestyle. They should find ways how to hide a dead animal from other wild animals. In order to get food ravens have made perfect methods and they do unbelievable actions to reach anything they want.
Ravens have gone through many tests and experiments proving that their brain is able to succeed in many complicated tasks. These birds are really intelligent and can even been taught to count.
3. Pigs
At first it may seem very strange when you think that pigs can be intelligent as we always see them rolling around the mud. But, yes, pigs are very smart animals, according to many experts. These domestic animals have passed through many experiments and succeeded. They learn each task very easily and quickly, and they are very friendly with other pigs. Besides they have a pretty good memory which allows them to remember all the people who have once treated them in a gentle way. This long term memory helps them to distinguish not only the ones that are very nice or brutal to them but also the pigs that are strangers for them.
Pigs, in general, have many similarities to dogs and chimpanzees but they have more complex brains than these animals.
4. Rats
Rats are considered to be highly intelligent creatures. They can be trained to learn many new tricks easily. When you call them, rats are able to recognize their names and approach you. They also share many emotions like humans – they can feel angry, lonely or stressed. So, whenever they are not accompanied by other rats or owners they may probably experience such emotions. Rats are very sociable and become happier when they play with other rats. They show their happiness through cuddling. Their favorite food may be their motivation to perform many tricks and solve puzzles or other simple issues.
They can be even taught to fetch a ball and drop it through a hoop. Sure, many people don’t think rats are smart but actually they are very intelligent, interactive and very entertaining creatures.
5. Chimpanzees
Sharing almost 99% of human DNA chimpanzees are among the most intelligent animals in the world. They can grasp many theories showing higher results. They have excellent memories and can play games remembering their opponent’s choices. Chimpanzees can adapt in many environments and even learn a sign language. They can handle many tools as they know that they are usable. For example, they can use stones to open nuts. They can share their food with other chimps and even many other species.
In order to communicate with each other, chimpanzees use body language and you can find many human-like expressions or hand gestures when they talk to other chimps. They can even laugh which shows that they understand what laughter or sadness is itself.
6.Elephants
Elephant is accepted as one of the smartest creatures on the planet. They have bigger brains and their brain cortex acquires as many neurons as a human brain. Actually they can recognize themselves whenever they look into the mirror. Elephants have impressive abilities like helping one another in an elephant herd. They are affectionate and very social. They are able to use tools including branches as they are capable of solving problems with their superior understanding. Elephants are really insightful having long memories and remembering voices and smells of different people.
When their family member dies they grieve for him and they are even able to shed tears for their loved one. It is a surprise or not, but elephants don’t differ from humans very much as they share many emotions like we do. Always be kind to these loyal and kind creatures.
7. Cows
These farm animals are smarter than we could ever think. They are smart and have many perfect capabilities in solving problems. They are really highly developed mammals that can remember things for a long period of time. Especially mother cows are very sensitive towards their babies. When they lose their little calves they behave very aggressively as they understand that they have been taken away. Shedding tears over their loss shows how smart they are and their children are the most important ones in their life. They are able to understand cause-and-effect relationships.
A bright example of this can be seen when they are thirsty as cows are able to push a lever to operate the drinking water. Many other intellectual challenges have taken for them and they completed them easily getting excited from their success.
8. Squirrels
Squirrels are perfect learners and have great abilities. When they want to find nuts they can use such tricks that you will really get amazed by them. Squirrels learn very quickly and if you don’t believe, you can make an experiment and make sure that they succeed taking many challenges. They have long term memory as they bury nuts and remember where they have hidden them. They use many tactics to get nuts and save them from predators. One of the interesting facts about their intelligence is the fake burials that squirrels make. They make them to avoid potential thieves of their nuts.
These thieves think that they are real burials stored with nuts but they make a great mistake. Yes, little squirrels are such creatures that have enough intelligence to keep them and their nuts in very safe places.
9. Pigeons
Pigeons are smarter than we give them credit for. They are able to learn some mathematical rules and have perfect memory. They can find their homes from hundred miles away as they have excellent eyesight. Having problem-solving skills pigeons can surprise anybody and make such intelligent choices. Pigeons have also passed the “mirror test” as they recognize their own reflection in the mirror perfectly. You can motivate a pigeon with his favorite food and he can differentiate two human beings in a photo. Pigeons are also found to recognize all 26 letters of the English alphabet.
They have excellent hearing abilities and can hear such sounds that even humans cannot. They are able to hear distant volcanoes and storms. Pigeons are really one of the smartest birds on the planet.
10. Octopuses
Octopuses appear to be more intelligent than the other vertebrates. They have a large brain which contains more than 130 million neurons. But 3/5 of an octopus’ neurons are found in its arms. It differs from other species with its clever problem-solving capabilities. Octopuses can play which is also a mark of intelligence. Many experiments have also been held to prove this fact. Besides they can find many ways for feeding. They use their muscular arms to grasp preys and can even open the plug of a bottle. Octopuses are complex creatures and everybody admires their features.
The sensitive and remarkable intelligence is something you cannot deny when you think about them. These creatures are really amazing both for their unique appearance and smart behavior.
11. Dogs
Besides being our best companions, dogs are also very intelligent and social animals. Their intelligence can be compared to a two-year-old human infant. They have a perfect smell and ability to learn from their human friends. Having a faster degree of learning and understanding dogs can find their home from distant miles. Identifying thousands of scents isn’t a problem for them, either. Dogs can do amazing things. They seem to pay a careful attention when we talk to them and they are able to follow all the given instructions, no matter how complicated they are. Dogs, more than any other animals, can understand our gestures and whenever we point an object they will follow the direction of that pointing.
They are really trainable and gifted animals that can be admired again and again. Whenever you devote your time and try to understand their nature through some experiments, you will see that dogs are very smart amongst the other creatures.
